Quinoa and plonk

August 10, 2005

It's not every day that you learn a new word AND a new foodstuff! One of my healthier office buddies was having quinoa (keen-wah), a seed related to spinach, last week for lunch, so I tried it last night and highly recommend it. It tastes nutty, has a great texture and apparently, is very good for you. I had it with some plonk, which, according to World Wide Words, is a deformation of "blanc", as in "vin blanc". My dictionary gives "vin ordinaire" and "pinard" as French equivalents, but I would have said "piquette" (from piquer, to sting, hence vinegary wine).

Help! I can't get into work today, I keep chatting and surfing when I've got lots to do. Triple coffee isn't helping. Please give advice on how to kick-start my day or I might have to go down the beach with my book…

Et oui que c'est bon avec ou sans piquette (moi j'aime bien avec du poisson et une petite sauce légère). Mais est-ce le quinoa ou la quinoa?
