Living in a lane puts £50,000 on your house
Where I learnt that the word lane is worth £50,000 more than the word drive in propertyworld. Madness.
Posted by céline, in Words, on December 2, 2005Yes, ridiculous. I think this is one of those stupid uses of statistics that the media are so fond of. I can well believe that the price of houses whose address is Lane are on average higher, since more quiet and spacious - formerly rural - streets are often called Lane and it would be logical if the average house on such a street was on average larger. But that doesn't mean it's more expensive BECAUSE the address is Lane.
So, how did you do with NaNoWriMo?
Posted by Jean on December 2, 2005 11:03 AMI can see it now, a mad rush of city officials renaming streets and drives in some misguided economic betterment program.
here in new york city, that very same idea has spread to entire neighborhoods. i am entirely convinced that the surge of newly named neighborhoods is some development-attractive scheme. It used to just be Greenwich Village, and Soho. Now we've got D.U.M.B.O, Noho, and RedHook.. we'll be overrun with hipster neighborhoods soon enough.
