First language attrition

January 11, 2006

Today's entry on first language attrition has been posted on omniglot.com. I felt very honoured when Simon asked me to contribute to his site, because I think omniglot.com is one of the most amazing language sites around. I particularly love the impressive listing of writing systems and languages that you can find there (including those invented by his readers!)

Elsewhere on the web, Lingo24 is organising a translation competition that could win you a holiday in Portugal. Good luck!

And an extra announcement! Don't worry if you have suscribed to this site and aren't receiving notifications. I'm having a few technical problems at the moment.

Comments

I enjoyed your comments about language attrition on your website. I have been living away from my country of birth (Czech Republic) for 25 years now (1.5 years in Germany, 1 year in Japan and the rest in US). Since except for our dogs, I have no one to speak to in Czech, my dominant language is now English and I don't really have a native language any more - I do most of my thinking in English, but from time to time, a Czech song or proverb or a Japanese kotowaza comes to mind and I switch for a while to another language. My kids only speak English, but they too sometime have a minor problem with their nationality - I have two teenage boys who are sometime called Czechanese Americans by their friends, since their mother is Japanese.

I wrote an article about how I feel about the subject of nativeness. I would be interested in your comments. If you want to read it, here is a link to it.
