Managing big projects

I have just taken on my biggest job yet: over 140,000 words to translate between now and the middle of June. From previous experience, I’m looking forward to it: I’ve already worked for this client, and the whole experience was excellent. The document was very interesting and the project manager was pleasant, organised and efficient, and made my work very easy indeed.
When I deal with large numbers of words, I use a spreadsheet to keep track of my work. I decide on daily targets, and whether I reach them or not, the spreadsheet keeps me up to date on how much needs to be translated every day til my deadline. I was wondering, however, how my colleagues deal with such jobs. The only translation project management program I’ve heard of is Translation 3000, have any of you used it? Do you know any others? Are they worth the investment?
Posted by céline, in Technical corner, on February 21, 2006I also use Excel to track my translation projects: from fairly elaborate spreadsheets to keep track of all projects incoming and outgoing, to specific ones to keep track of large or complicated projects (to keep track of how much there is to be done, how much I have already done, and how much to do each day).
