Murmuration

March 29, 2006

A term for a flock (of starlings).

To see a short video of a murmuration of starlings over (what's left of) Brighton's West Pier, click on the image below (Windows Media file, 3.5MB, the size of a song in mp3 format).

murmuration video clip

The show is on every night around dusk.

Fantastic clip! Is the noise on the film the birds, the sea or the wind? Either way, it has made me long to be by the sea.

It's cars rushing just behind me. Kidding, kidding, it was very windy (and very cold, I almost lost a couple of fingers filming it), so I guess it was a mix of sea and wind noises.

Hi Céline - great video! People have to see it to understand how amazing it is. Will add a link to it, hope that's OK.

brilliant video, we get the same here in reed beds in norfolk. your friend jo sent me this link. (we'd been talking about the very same thing!) spectacular... and you've taught an englishman a new english word. "murmuration..."

Jo doesn't waste time, we only talked about you last night! Did she tell you about me misunderstanding another friend who was talking about a peregrine chasing starlings? I heard "a penguin chasing starlings", and was utterly bemused for a couple of seconds. Now that's a video I'd like to see.

Thank you for a great video and bringing back the memory of a great trip (I lived in Brighton for two months back in 2003), along with an interesting new word.

As an avid birder in the Eastern U.S., I must say that "we" (i.e. the proverbial we) tend to have a significant distaste for euro-starlings because
a)they have taken up valuable "habitatage" for valuable native beaks, and
b)their ever-changing plumes require that one must always keep a mental "starling filter" switched to the "on" position.

Hmm...numerous " "s from me. Oh well. Cool video though!

I lived in Brighton from 1999-2003 and I always preferred West Pier to the other glossy one...I also loved this view over the West Pier...you actually make me "homesick" and I am in a Caribbean island right now, so imagine that...Nice video...
