Trados makes Word crash

July 7, 2006

Are you a Trados user? Have you had problems with it recently? Namely, does Word crash every time you try and use Trados to do a translation? This thread on proz will help you remove the Microsoft Update which is causing the problem. I feel very ambiguous towards translation portals such as proz, but one thing is for sure: the forums are full of intelligent people willing to help their colleagues in a crisis, which makes them an invaluable resource for translators.

Just out of interest, could you say a little bit more why you feel ambiguous towards translation portals?

Well, for one, I don't like bidding systems (see my entry http://www.nakedtranslations.com/en/2005/04/000379.php). Then I don't like the fact that anyone can be a member without having to prove in any way that they are serious about translation and language. It means that a lot of the systems are flawed (Kudoz comes to mind), because some of the people who use them don't really have a clue about what being a translator means.

This might sound elitist, but I don't really want to hang out on a site with members called "bighug333", who might be a 15-year-old looking to get their homework done for free, or "mm00", who translates from French, English and Spanish into Punjabi, Zulu and Chinese. It's just not the kind of site I want to participate in.

On the other hand, there are a lot of excellent translators who aren't quite as hung-up as I am and provide excellent advice and support on such sites. I just wish the system was designed so as to weed out people who really aren't serious about translation as a profession.
