Mystery castle
June 1, 2007

This castle appears in a famous film, which features an English Queen and a French King who both conquered England 400 years apart. What's the name of the castle? For maximum points, if you're feeling very clever, you can also give the names of the Queen and of the King.

UPDATE
Ok, ok, it's Friday, we're all tired and it is quite a tricky question, so I'm going to help you out. This is a photo of Raby Castle, in County Durham. Now, what are the names of the film, the Queen and the King?
Posted by céline, in Culture, on June 1, 2007The movie: Elizabeth
The queen: Elizabeth I
The king: Future king Henri III (then still Duc d'Anjou)
2 out of 3! The King bit is a trick question. I'll help you out: he's not actually a character in the film, and he used to be the King of the Red Devils.
Posted by céline on June 2, 2007 1:00 PMI used this magical divination tool called Gurgling (it's not really witchcraft, but witches were often heard cast a similar last-minute spell). Out of the ether came the information that in fact three films were reported to have been made there - Elizabeth, Hamlet and The Slipper and the Rose.
The films apparently became favourites for two tenants of the bungalow - King Cnut and Mary, Queen of Scots. However they had to buy the DVDs because despite all their powers they weren't capable of downloading - let alone Gurgling - through the bungalow's twenty-feet thick walls (according to their ISP of the time, it was a Wifi problem).
Do I get a prize?
Posted by Paul Betts on June 2, 2007 1:07 PMI can confirm that Wifi seems to be a rare luxury in the North-East, much to my chagrin, particularly in 11th century castles. No prizes until someone tells me who the French King is!
Posted by céline on June 2, 2007 1:18 PMEric Cantona. He was in it, wasn't he? Playing a French ambassador.
Posted by Eleanor on June 3, 2007 9:45 PMEric Cantona! Your "Red Devils" clue gave him away. I have to admit, however, to using Mr. Google - the translator's best friend. Do I still qualify for the prize? :)
Posted by P.B. on June 3, 2007 10:23 PMWell done! Who needs a prize when you've got my unreserved admiration?
