Nimby and banana

June 26, 2007

I do quite a lot of work with local authorities desperately trying to solve the waste crisis in the area, so I knew the term "nimby" (Not In My Back Yard), which describes people who refuse to have anything new built near their home (and particularly not anything to do with waste). I learnt a new one during a recent meeting for people who are slightly more extreme than that: "banana" (Build Absolutely Nothing Anywhere Near Anyone). No need to explain this one.

This is FUN !

Céline's piece piqued my curiosity, so I had a little trawl around the web. Several sites publish lists of these acronyms relating to real estate development, land use, etc.

I've found one or two that might be worth mentioning:

NUMBY: not under my back yard (no tunnels etc)

NOPE : not on Planet Earth

LULU : any work or project to which local residents are opposed. It stands, apparently, for "locally unwanted land use."

And lastly, my favourite:

CAVE: people who don't want any new work or development at all, or "citizens against virtually everything".

I'd like to join, but I'm against groups of that kind.

Being a Sim City fan, I had already heard of the 'Not In My Back Yard' acronym as opposed to the 'Yes In My Back Yard'.

In fact you can find on the internet different 'NIMBY/YIMBY' lists which show you the influence that the different buildings will have on crime, pollution, development of residential areas, etc.

Unfortunately, never heard of BANANAs ;)
