Consideration

July 27, 2007

It’s Friday and it’s been a busy week, so I thought I’d tell you a nice language-related (of course!) story. My niece Jasmine, who is 4 and a half, is learning the alphabet. Her mum, who’s a teacher, never misses an opportunity to help her practice.

Mum: "Ok Jasmine, look, this is ‘a’ is for ‘apple’."
Jasmine: "‘a’ for ‘apple’."
Mum: "Great. ‘B’ is for ‘boat’."
Jasmine: "‘b’. ‘Boat’."
Mum: "Excellent. Now, can you think of a word that starts with ‘c’?"

Jasmine thinks for a few seconds and says: "‘Consideration’?"

She couldn’t have made her auntie much prouder.

Good girl! There's a bright future waiting for little Jasmine. Maybe as a philosopher, or a scientist, or a linguist. Wait, how about as a lexicographer?!

Cute! Reminds me of a TV ad that's on at the moment for an insurance company, possibly (it's so sweet I've never paid attention to what it's actually trying to advertise): father comes home after a hard day at work; toddler daughter is playing with alphabet cubes; he goes, 'What have you written here, darling?' (or something like that); he looks and slowly deciphers 'paleontology'; thinks she will go to college later and it will cost a packet. LOL!

What an impressive child. Quite literally I laughed out loud. An equal mix of humor and surprise at her precocious response. I wonder what word in English or French could sum up my blended reaction. While I may not know Jasmine's future, obviously she has already given it serious consideration.
