Jean-Paul sent me the link the other day. I donated 500 grains of rice. I cheated on the last one (looked the word up in the dictionary - can't remember what it was: incredibly obscure; even my partner, who's British and an editor, didn't know it). It was for a good cause, after all. ;-)

I went back just now (such a good excuse for procrastinating) and donated another big(ger) lot of rice. Anyone who's learned Latin or another Latin language, like French, will find it easier. I spotted a couple of Yiddish words too (I know, I know, Céline: I'm a *bad* girl).

Still, I just wanted to add that there's no way I'm going to remember any of the words I didn't know in the first place. Without a context, a word is just an arrangement of letters. The website is a lovely idea and makes one feel quite good about oneself, but their claim that it can be used to learn words is overstated, imo - to check one's vocabulary, yes; to learn new words, probably not.

maybe not learn if you have never seen it before, but I probably learnt quite a few words, or at least realised that (eg) the word "acequia" is used in English as well as Spanish. The idea of "learning vocab" in my own language is odd.

Brilliant, if annoyingly addictive. And yes, it does help if you speak another Romance language!
