I’m off to Wales for a holiday. As I’ll be the co-pilot on this journey and due to the fact that we’ll be going through places such as Eglwysbach, Llanfairpwllgwyngyll, Abergwy-gregyn and the like (I’ll do my best to avoid Llanfairpwllgwyngyllgogerychwyrndrobwllllantysiliogogogoch, thankyouverymuch), I must learn enough Welsh pronunciation if I don’t want us to get hopelessly lost as soon as we’ve crossed the border. It’s bad enough that I can’t read a map.

Fortunately, I found a handy guide on Welsh place names, which gives a simple description of Welsh consonants and vowels. For the more curious, omniglot offers more information on Welsh, as well as lots of links.

If my memory betrays me when I’m asked where a place is, I can always reply using the well-known expression yn twll tin Ifan saer (Thanks for the tip Stuart).

I had to learn how to pronounce Llanfairpwllgwyngyllgogerychwyrndrobwllllantysiliogogogoch before my Welsh partner's grandmother would accept me into the family!
