Landfill sites: English - French glossary

October 22, 2007

I've been doing a lot of work in the field of waste management during the last few years. In preparing for interpreting jobs I found very few bilingual resources, particularly when it comes to specific terminology. I thought I'd share the glossary on landfill sites I've compiled following numerous on-site visits, presentations and meetings on the subject. I hope it will be useful to some of you.

Another fantastic resource for French technical vocabulary is produced by the Office québecois de la langue française (in Canada). Due to the enormous cultural power and proximity of the USA, the OQLF is very active in quickly creating new French versions of the many neologisms spawned by the American tech & business worlds. (Note that some of these may not be known in France however, where the practice may be to simply to use the American word).

Huh -- one of my freelance editing gigs is for a waste-management newsletter. Only in English, though!

By the way, you might want to fix "gaz turbine" and "gaz well."
