The power of interpreters

I've never done this before, but as I haven't had time to blog much lately and am off interpreting later on, I thought I'd repost a favourite entry of mine called The power of interpreters, dating from December 2007. I'll be back next week with a great guest post.

Interpreters have a lot of power. People rely entirely on me to communicate, and sometimes it is ever so tempting to be “creative” to get out of an unpleasant situation. The following illustrates something that happened on Monday. My client took a group of 30 French farmers (and me) to a Sussex farm which has taken steps to limit its impact on the environment. They were very interested and wanted to see everything, but after a rainy weekend, there was mud everywhere, I was wearing my new shoes and I didn’t want to ruin them. I’ll let you guess who won: Céline the Bad Interpreter or Céline the Good Interpreter?

I love it -- fantastic cartoon. I am guessing your "good interpreter" side won. Or perhaps you got some nice boots so you didn't have to ruin your nice shoes (I am all about shoes, so I certainly understand!).

That is my greatest fear when I translate, that I will be creative without even noticing it...
My "bad interpreter" side can easily get the better of me.......
