Living in England means that I miss a lot of French films I would certainly go and see if I was in France, so it’s nice when they’re successful or big enough to make it across the Channel, like A Very Long Engagement (Un long dimanche de fiançailles).
I was expecting to love it, as Jean-Pierre Jeunet is one of my favourite directors, but I was slightly disappointed. The photography was amazing, the war scenes stunning and frightening, the story engaging, but the characterisation was quite poor; the fact that I never managed to feel much for Mathilde and Manech, the main characters, meant that by the middle of the film I didn’t really care whether she was going to find him or not. I still recommend it though, if only to hear Jodie Foster speaking perfect French.
